Started in 1978 as a CHALLENGE between friends on Valentine’s day in 1977. Men and women who swam and ran together who knew about triathlon and discovering there endurance potential, who were veterans of the Waikiki rough water swim and the Honolulu marathon and were ready for something new. The question arose of who was the fittest, the runners or the swimmers. Before they knew it, they had a date and worked out the details. Simply a combination of three major events on the island of Oahu, the Waikiki Rough Water Swim, The Annual 112 mile bicycle race around the island and the Honolulu Marathon. No One knew that they had started the World Wide Movement, The Iron Man. Once Sports Illustrated made the event public in 1979 followed by the ABC coverage in 1980, it turned into a worldwide phenomenon. THE BIRTH OF A MOVEMENT, THE ENDURANCE OF THE HUMAN BODY, MIND AND SPIRIT.
